About Us

Local, fresh and honest:

NewsVineWA is the current student journalism publication for Edith Cowan University in Western Australia.

The stories you read here are real. Our mission is to provide useful information for young people living in Perth, that’s fresh and honest. We publish once a week during our teaching semesters and for the rest of the year this is an archive of our work.

Students are required to follow the MEAA Code of Ethics in all of their reporting and they retain the copyright to their work.

In order to be clear with you, our readers, about what we are doing we’ll explain two current media buzz words and our position in relation to them.

The first is native advertising. It’s a new name for something that used to be called advertorial. It’s when a publication is paid to write an article that promotes a product or event. We want to be crystal clear that we don’t accept money for articles and we don’t allow money to sway our editorial judgement. If we express a positive opinion, it is an honest one. The same goes for our negative opinions.

The second is content marketing. This is when a company or institution creates a news product in order to promote itself or its products. We openly admit that one of our goals is to showcase the work of ECU students and to promote ECU as a good place to study media and communications. That said, we turn our investigative spotlight on ECU when issues arise that warrant journalistic enquiry. In doing so we seek to be fair, balanced and accurate and we are honest about our sources and limitations.

If you have queries regarding the site, its content, or ECU journalism, please contact Dr Laura Glitsos via [email protected]

Also please note that the work published on the site is that of the student authors and doesn’t not necessarily reflect the views of Edith Cowan University or its representatives.

Finally, we want to give thanks and credit to the former ECU journalism students whose local news photos make up our banner. The protest image came from Marziya Mohammedali, the concert and some of the street art from Kristina Simich and the photo of a street hockey player was taken by Marley Amphlett.

Thanks for reading us,
